Volcom

Volcom was concieved during the March dumps of 1991. Richard "Wooly" Woolcott and Tucker "T-Dawg" Hall eased off work to hit the mountains and were blessed over the space of a week with 2 feet of fresh snow daily. It was a trip that would forever change their lives as it was during this trip that the initial idea of starting a company with roots within the three board sports that they both loved- skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing was seriously planted and ‘Volcom’ and ‘the Stone’ was born. The ethos behind the brand would incorporate the major philosophy of the times, ‘Youth Against Establishment’ which would become a motto for the company.

Times were a changing- board sports in the US were frowned upon, with the country in recession, riots in LA and turmoil in the Gulf, the people behind Volcom saw it as a way of saying no to the current state of supression and mediocrity prevalent within their world.

With this notion driving the brand Volcom saw itself as firmly anti establishment and pro creativity inspiring a range with an artistic viewpoint and imagery. "The Volcom stone" logo was created by Eli Kramer which became the icon for the brand inspiring many designs incorporating the logo.

The company is based in Costa Mesa, CA. In April 2005, the Company changed its name to Volcom, Inc. and is known for its elaborate uses of the "stone" logo and its "Youth Against Establishment" motto.

It is also actively involved in a campaign that it calls "Let the Kids Ride Free. Since 1995 Volcom has provided a platform for aspiring artists to express themselves through the 'Featured Artists' line of products.
