Stussy

Shawn Stussy was a surfboard shaper from Laguna Beach, California, who as a side line to his surfboard shaping business, also produced and sold men's t-shirts and women's t-shirts with his distinctive, stussy graffiti inspired, signature tag. The popularity of Stussy t shirts grew and with demand for alternative women's clothes and men's clothes on the rise Stussy expanded the clothing range to include Stussy hats, Stussy jackets and Stussy wallets. At the core was the distinctive Stussy emblem, which is still used widely across all of the range of Stussy t shirts and Stussy clothes.

Stussy Clothing was born out of an era inspired by reggae music, skateboarding and the recent emergence of hip hop and DJ culture. Although stussy clothing was initially percieved as a surf brand, stussy has now become a reputable streetwear label with International recognition, especially for the distinctive designs of its stussy t-shirts and Stussy Jackets.

Stussy Clothing have adopted a shrewd plan to allow their business to develop without flooding the market. Like other sought after streetwear brands, Stussy have been very stringent in regulating which outlets stock the stussy brand and what brands it t-shirts, caps, jackets and other clothing sit alongside instore thus ensuring that the stussy clothing company’s image and integrity is not compromised at street level. 

Stussy has a line which now includes stussy tee-shirts, sweaters, hoodies, jackets, shirts, denim, hats, belts, wallets and luggage for both men and women. stussy often collaborates with individual artists or other brands which work on the same level as Stussy - although most end up as limited release and small number runs which add to the scarcity and rarity of these products thus elevating stussy's reputation. It is a clever strategy which benefits both collaborators and allows the brand to be ‘followed’ by its customers.

For the past 10 years both Stussy mens clothes and Stussy womens clothes have been designed by Nick Bower, and Paul Mittleman. Stussy clothes are known for their clean design, wild 80’s inspired graphics and their parallel, more subtle, classic tailored cut and sew pieces  such as their stussy jackets, as well as keeping to their roots with a variety of alternate logo designs which allow for a wide spectrum of tastes and trends.

Stussy has over 60 retail stores around the world, which are referred to as "chapters". Many Stussy chapters produce special limited edition items exclusive to that particular chapter.
