Lakai

Lakai is a company that designs skateboard footwear and is based in Torrance, California. Lakai was created by professional skateboarders and Girl Skateboards co-founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard in 1999. They started Lakai after both riders left DC Shoes.

The name Lakai is derived from Malakai which is Mike Carroll's nickname. In May 2006, pro skateboarder Eric Koston officially signed with Lakai after leaving éS Footwear at the end of 2005 after a difference of opinion with éS owners Pierre André and Don Brown who declined to give Koston part ownership in the company, Koston decided not to renew his contract and joined  Lakai team instead.

Lakai’s first full-length video Fully Flared premiered in November 2007 after the deadline for completion was put back time and time again most notably for Kostons recent joining of the ranks and to give him time to gather footage. It was this constant postponing of the release that made it one of the most eagerly awaited videos of all time and it lived up to its hype gaining much acclaim on its release. It was actually made available on December 7, 2007.

Lakai is part of the Crailtap family, which also includes Chocolate Skateboards, Girl Skateboards, Royal Trucks, Four Star Clothing, Ruby Republic, and Skate Mental. Its clean, contemporary graphics have given Lakai a reputation as a company at the cutting edge of skate graphic design alongside with its sister board companies Girl and Chocolate which it regularly collaborates with. It also releases a modest apparel range to complement its shoe line.

The Lakai skate team consists of  Rick Howard, Mike Carroll, Marc Johnson, Scott Johnston, Brandon Biebel, Jeff Lenoce, Rob Welsh, Guy Mariano, Eric Koston, Jesus Fernandez, Mike Mo Capaldi, Laurent James, Cairo Foster, Lucas Puig, JB Gillet, Danny Brady and Nick Jenson.
