Etnies

Etnies is an American footwear brand based in Lake Forest, California and owned by Sole Technology, Inc. with roots deeply embedded in skateboarding. Primarily, the company is driven by their Etnies skate shoe brand, but in more recent years Etnies has also created shoes and clothing for snowboarders, BMX and motocross riders, as well as surfers.

First concieved in France in 1986, the brand's original name was Etnics, derived from the word "ethnic," which was a nod to the skateboarding sub-culture. It was later renamed Etnies due to legal issues. In 1989, Pierre-André Sénizergues became CEO, making it the first skateboard shoe brand owned by a professional skateboarder and thus legitimizing it as a serious company with skateboarders interests in mind. Its reputation grew with classic styles like the Rap and Sal Barbiers pro shoe the Sal to gain popularity and win over the worldwide skate community.

Over the past few years it has diversified its collection to include more lifestyle shoes aswell as offering specific styles to women, kids and toddlers. They often collaborate with skate companies and artists to produce limited colourways and specials which liven up the seasonal line. Using the latest of technological advances in footwear manufacturing, Etnies incorporate a number of clever design features in the production of their shoes most notably STI footbeds and gel inserts to minimize heel bruising and ankle injury.

Aside from footwear Etnies now host a range of mens, womens and youth clothing including, tee-shirts, hoods, shirts, jackets, caps, beanies, pants and denim including accessories such as wallets, belts, socks, key rings, lanyards and other trinkets. In addition to their basic line they have elevated production to include a number of cut and sew pieces throughout their men’s and women’s ranges offering custom pieces unique to the usual skateboard attire.

The Etnies skate team consists of Sean Malto, Ronnie Creager, Ryan Sheckler, Elissa Steamer, Jason Dill, Kyle Leeper, Rune Glifberg, Mikey Taylor, Javier Mendizabal, Frederick Overton and Haytch Bence (AM).
