Carhartt Streetwear

Carhartt Inc. was established in 1889 in Detroit, Michigan USA by Hamilton Carhartt. For over 119 years Carhartt has been dedicated to its mission of providing Best In Class apparel for the worker/labourer.

Its hallmark is for rugged construction, innovative design and exceptional standards of quality, durability and comfort, Carhartt workwear has become a legend in the skilled trades. It is known for its clothing, such as jackets, coats, overalls, coveralls, vests, shirts, jeans and dungarees.
Carhartt was originally founded to make work clothing for railroad workers. Their initial growth throughout the 1890s was focused on suppling railroad workers with  durable and long lasting work overalls. Over time, Carhartt clothing items evolved trademark features intended to further extend durability, including the use of heavy duty threads, reinforcing rivets at vital stress points, and a variety of durable, high technology materials resistant to flames, abrasion and water. It is still commonly found within the skilled trades where there is need for long lasting work attire with an emphasis on strength.

Since 2000, Carhartt has had to out source its production abroad due to an influx of workwear competition yet strives to maintain its high standard of quality and manufacture that its reputation demands without compromising its own integrity or price brackets. Carhartt has stated that its international suppliers must have Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production certification. Since 1994 Carhartt has extended its supply to the skilled/manual trades by providing the same high quality, durable workwear to Europe and beyond. It is controlled and distributed by Work in Progress who also handle the Carhartt streetwear division of the brand which has blossomed over the last 15 years to become one of the key brands within the streetwear industry.

Carhartt Streetwear is a division of the Workwear range featuring the brands stringent manufacting standards but marketed as a more fashionable and youthful line to sit alongside brands such as Stussy, Volcom and Nike. By controlling their distribution to stores which invariable epitomise the streetwear market, rooted in the ‘real’, they maintain a level of integrity which is essential to legitamize your status within a fiercly critical scene, quick to cast aside mass-appeal and the saturated.

In Japan, it is a familiar streetbrand that often collaborates with other streetwear brands. An example would be the line of A Bathing Ape X Carhartt camouflage hoodies and jackets or the numerous collaborations with shoe companies such as Vans incorporating the trademark rugged Carhartt fabrics for which they have become so well renowned.

Carhartt Streetwear sponsors and supports affinity groups such as artists, musicians and skateboarders, providing funding for competitions and art events throughout Europe. They release a free seasonal magazine through they’re European, Australian and Asian outlets called Rugged which focuses on art, skateboarding, BMX, graffiti, music, interviews, obscure youth subcultures and alternative historical articles as well as providing a platform for advertising Carhartts latest range of streetwear- allowing them to keep they’re market base in touch with whats going on in world of urban culture. They have also helped fund a number of films either street art related or following the exploits of their extensive, multi-national skate and BMX teams.

The current streetwear range includes performance related technical jackets aimed at the snowboard/crossover market. Heavy workwear jackets with an emphasis on durability, warmth and quality. Lightweight jackets and wind breakers, track jackets and warm-up, athletic zip-tops, hoodies and sweaters, knitted jumpers and woven shirts, plaid lumberjack over-shirts, an extensive range of denims available in a host of contemporary washes and stylings including high-end selvedge denim, work pants and trousers, military style cargos, caps, beanies, leather belts, wallets and numerous accessories. They often release limited runs of toys or models each new season which has proven popular in todays limited edition adult toy market.
