Almost
Almost Skateboards was created in 2003 by Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song after both skaters had left the less successful Artafact and Deca skate companies. With Almost focusing on the more technical and intricate of skateboarding tricks and manouvers it seems only correct that this company should be concieved from the two most technically accomplished riders who have both reached legendary status from their constant innovation of precision skateboarding skills.
Taking skateboarding to levels previously thought impossible and raising the bar in terms of what is considered the top level in their profession, both Mullen and Song have earnt their places in skateboardings hall of fame and have featured on numerous computer based skateboarding games including the Tony Hawk skateboarding and Thrasher Skate and Destroy on the Playstation and EA’s Skate on the Xbox and Playstation 3.
Alongside unique deck construction, Almost produces wheels, bearings and clothing ( Tee-shirts, hoods, shirts, jackets, caps, beanies, pants and denim) including softgoods and trinkets. They have released two influential skateboard films- Almost Round 3 (2005) and Almost Cheese and Crackers (2006) to critical acclaim.
They have a unique approach to deck construction which often shows the company striving to introduce technically stronger and lighter deck manufacturing. Their use of resin epoxy and recently released impact support construction which incorporates carbon fibre plates inserted around the truck mountings ( the most prone area for deck breakage) allegedly increases strength but reduces the overall weight of a skateboard deck. They often use half-ply construction to increase performance and engineer 8-ply layered boards with no obvious weight gain over a conventional setup.
The Almost skate team lineup includes Rodney Mullen, Daewon Song, Lewis Marnell, Chris Haslam, Torey Pudwill and Cooper Wilt who all continue to show a dominatingly active presence in major international competitions.
